How I Got Started

Have you ever felt like life is running you over?

8 months ago:

I had just gone back to work after maternity leave, I was exhausted, depressed, and stressed out because I really wanted to stay home with my babies. They are only little for so long, but we just couldn’t make it work financially. My job was going through a rough patch, and I was just getting frustrated with being there in general.

Also,  I was feeling like I was losing my identity. I absolutely love being a mom, a wife, but I wanted to be known as Ariel too. Adding to my frustration was I just couldn’t figure out who I was anymore. I didn’t have any hobbies, and it’s not like I was just sitting at home bored! (You can’t be bored when you have 3 little kids running around.) But, I knew that was what I needed a hobby, and preferably a hobby that I could make money from.

My nightly routine after putting the kids to bed was to get on Pinterest. Scroll through the thousand of fun ideas I knew I would never do! Ha! (Which probably didn’t add to my current predicament!) I kept coming across ideas for building stuff out of pallets. I would think “Now that’s a cool idea!” I would pin the ideas, and keep moving on. After a little while I told myself that you know I could do something with pallets. So one day, I told Seth that I wanted to get some pallets. He kind of just rolled his eyes at me and said, “Ok, Hunny.” (He didn’t realize how serious I was.)

After bugging him about it a couple more times Seth finally brought some home. I  was so excited! Pallets are big and bulky and not all of them are in the best of shape. Disappointed that they weren’t in wonderful shape like the ones I had seen on the internet, I let them sit for a little while.

One Sunday afternoon, after I had put the kids down for naps, I decided I was going to do this! I had spent a good chunk of time researching how to take pallets apart. I told myself I was going to do it! I asked my husband where the sawzall was. (I think he was impressed I even knew what that was.) Rolling his eyes at me (Probably thinking about the huge bonfire he was going to have later on. HA!)  he told me where it was. Down into the basement I went and got the sawzall and brought it up. Opening the case I noticed that the blade wasn’t in the tool. I fidgeted with it for a while until I decided I couldn’t figure this thing out. So again, I went to go look for Seth. He put the blade in for me and away I went ready to tackle these pallets! I plugged in the sawzall and pulled the trigger. Feeling the power of the tool in my hands made me feel so powerful! I went to work!

I was so amazed! In about 30 minutes I had taken apart 5 pallets! Even if  I couldn’t feel my arms from the vibration of the sawzall. HA!  (It really beats you up!) I looked around at my handiwork, and was so excited and proud of myself! Seth came around the corner of the house and said, “Did you just get finished with one pallet?” Beaming, I said, “NO! I have done 5 of them!” He saw my pile of wood smiled and said, “Wow! Good job!” I said, “Just watch! I am going to make a little business out of this! Then I will be able to stay home with the kids!”

Present Day:

I have made several things out of pallet wood if you want to check them out you can here. There is just something about working with your hands, it just fills you with so much pride!  I am not able to quit my day job yet, but I am looking forward to the day that I can!
